What is Zi Wei Dou Shu?
A Chinese way of reading the moment you were born as a map of twelve areas of life, filled with named stars.
Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数, often called Purple Star Astrology) turns your birth date and hour into a chart of twelve “palaces”. Each palace stands for an area of life: yourself, work, money, love, home, friends and so on. More than a hundred named stars are placed into the palaces, and fourteen principal stars carry most of the meaning.
The name comes from Zi Wei, the “purple” enclosure around the celestial pole that Chinese astronomy pictured as the emperor’s court at the centre of the sky. Dou Shu means, roughly, “the reckoning of the Dipper”.
Think of the chart as a language of symbols. It can help you put words to your strengths, the tensions you keep meeting and the seasons of your life. It is not a verdict on who you must be.

Most “stars” in Zi Wei Dou Shu are not planets you can see. They are calculated points, placed by rules that use the Chinese lunisolar calendar: your birth year, lunar month, lunar day and two-hour period. The same birth data always gives the same chart.
Tradition credits the system to Chen Tuan, a Daoist sage of the 10th century, but historians cannot confirm it. The texts we can read today, such as the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, were printed in the Ming dynasty, in the 16th century.
