Supporting stars

Smaller stars add help, friction and movement to the principal stars.

Besides the fourteen principal stars, every chart has many smaller ones. They rarely decide anything alone; they colour the palace they sit in.

Older books call the challenging ones “malefic”. A modern reading treats them as pressure, conflict or instability that asks for boundaries and realism, and often also as the push that gets things done.

Six helpers (六吉)

Zuo Fu and You Bi, the left and right assistants: help, teamwork, people who back you up.
Wen Chang and Wen Qu: learning, writing, exams and graceful expression.
Tian Kui and Tian Yue: timely support from mentors, elders and institutions.

Six challengers (六煞)

Qing Yang and Tuo Luo: sharp, cutting drive and slow, dragging delay.
Huo Xing and Ling Xing: sudden heat and a quieter, lingering pressure.
Di Kong and Di Jie: emptiness and loss, but also detachment and original ideas.

Resources and movement

禄存
Lu Cun: steady, kept resources and caution with them.
天马
Tian Ma, the heavenly horse: movement, travel and gains made on the move.

Go deeper

Most supporting stars come in pairs and are placed by your birth year, month or hour. A pair is read more strongly when both stars sit in or around the same palace.
